When Samuel Kidner first arrived in Melbourne (by February 1858), he advertised that he was a homœopathic chemist from London, and that he was at 44 Elizabeth Street in Melbourne. There he sold domestic medicine cases and books, and provided advice daily from 9am until 5pm. The premises was shared with Henry Biers & Co, an estate agent.

It appears that he didn’t stay long at Elizabeth Street, as he then established a homœopathic dispensary at his cottage in Brighton Road, St Kilda (Erin Cottage). He advertised that he was sole agent for Turner’s homœopathic medicines, and sold chests and domestic works for family use. He was available “from 9 to 1am and from 6 to 9pm”.

Kidner was still running his dispensary from Erin Cottage in early May 1860. In later May, however, he announced that he had entered into a partnership with Edward Gould, who had just arrived in Melbourne, and was opening his new premises at 102 Collins Street East.
