Dr Henry Backhaus was a German Roman Catholic priest. In 1847 Dr Henry Backhaus (Doctor of Divinity, not a medical doctor) arrived in Adelaide, after a brief posting in Sydney. By 1851 it was reported that:
The medicines are procurable here; some have been imported, and a German chemist undertakes to make them up. Dr Bockhaus also, a German Romish priest here, is reputed to possess medical skill in the new system.
The correct spelling for Dr Bockhaus is “Backhaus”. In 1852 he moved from Adelaide to Bendigo, where he became well-known in the Bendigo goldfields for caring for the sick, providing homœopathic treatment in addition to his duties as priest.
