Anglican minister at Williamstown’s Trinity Church, Rev Wilkinson was a temperance advocate and lay homœopath. He had an extensive herb garden.

After his death in 1875, the Wilkinson Memorial Drinking Fountain, imported from Glasgow, was inaugurated by the Bishop of Ballarat. Presumably it was established to discourage alcohol abuse, providing an alternative source of drink. A cast iron piece, it is the earliest known memorial drinking fountain in Melbourne, and is on the Victorian Heritage Register. It stands in the corner of Commonwealth Reserve, opposite the Customs House.
