Dr Wishart was a New Zealander who had trained at the University of Otago. He commenced work as a Resident Medical Officer at the Melbourne Homœopathic Hospital in 1911, after which he was appointed to the Honorary Surgical Staff in 1914. After studying abroad, he also became Honorary Urologist in 1936.

Although his training was ‘orthodox’, his father had used homœopathy, and it was from him that he had acquired his knowledge of it, and his conviction of its value.

WB Wishart preached asepsis in the operating theatre, taught it to the nurses, and dissuaded surgeons from the custom of inserting unsterile gauze wicks into wounds after operations.
