[1846 - 1919]

Frederick was born at Longford, Tasmania on 19 December 1846. He was the son of Langdon Fairthorne, chemist, and his wife Maria Emily.

Frederick was educated at Horton College and the Church Grammar School, Launceston.

Frederick became his father's assistant in the business, serving his articles there, and passing his pharmacy exams in March 1871. In July of the same year they announced the commencement of their partnership, with the business to be re-named 'L. Fairthorne & Son'. After the death of his father he became owner of the firm.

He held several public positions, being appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1893. In 1897 Mr Fairthorne was elected as an alderman of the city, and was Mayor from 1900 - 1902. He resigned from council in 1908. He served as president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Tasmania and as one of its council members. He also joined the volunteer rifle regiment, eventually rising to the rank of captain.

Like his father, he was very interested in the mining industry, especially on the West and North-East Coasts.

He died on 14 November 1919 at the family home called "Highbury" in Arthur Street.
