[? 1853 - 1921]

John Henry Lithgow was born approximately 1853 in the North of Ireland. Details about his early life are vague, his obituary containing dates which are approximate rather than exact. He moved around Tasmania, living at various times in Hobart, Zeehan (in the early days), and New Norfolk.

In 1880 he married Esther Mary Paul in Hobart. They had three children - 2 sons and one daughter.

According to some of his early advertisements as a chemist, he had worked with Weaver & Co. at Hobart and had been an assistant with Fairthorne & Son for two and a half years. He also mentioned that he had spent some time working with a chemist in Melbourne, although the name of the chemist and the dates of his service there were not mentioned.

In May 1882 Fairthorne entered into an arrangement with Mr J. Henry Lithgow so that Lithgow & Co. took over their pharmacy on the corner of Charles and York Streets.

Mr Lithgow died on 7 September, 1921 at the home of one of his sons.
