Richard Heales came to Australia from England in 1842. He became a prosperous merchant, was a teetotaller and an active Congregationalist. He became a Member of the Legislative Council of Victoria in 1857, and Premier of Victoria in 1860.

 

In 1859 he chaired the first meeting of people interested in establishing the Melbourne Homœopathic Dispensary, and was appointed to the committee.

 

The Melbourne suburb of Healesville is named after him.
