Edward Ash was born in 1831 at Yeovil, Somerset, England. By 1854 he had emigrated to Tasmania, where he settled and married Martha Raymond (1825 - 1916).
Mr Ash established a business as a chemist and druggist in Elizabeth Street, Hobart.
Edward and Martha had seven children, three of whom (Edward Raymond, Percy and Ernest) also became chemists and joined the firm.
According to his brief obituary in The Mercury, Edward arrived in the colony in 1853 and was for a time House-surgeon at St Mary's Hospital. He died on 18th April, 1883.
